Artist Statement

My work is a reflection of my internal stream of consciousness- a vocabulary of shapes, forms and structures that articulates an aesthetic ideal or conceptual idea.  By working in different mediums each piece ultimately brings to light a new interesting object contained within a space and within that space creates a dialogue.  These new objects all share my artistic vision that echoes Marcel Breuer’s dictum:  “Structure is not a means of a solution, it is also a principle and a passion”.

Free from imposing the constrains of “function” on my design work, my sculptures are more conceptually inspired. Often the trigger point is a structure, element or thought that is straightforward, but then transformed or deconstructed to an abstraction. At times recognizable, in other instances unrecognizable from the original inspiration that nurtured the new structure.

My ultimate challenge as a sculptor is to build succinctly, but with a strong conceptual implication.

In the sculptures Pared/Wall I-III, the spike is a good example of an element that gives an implicit meaning politically, emotionally, socially; it speaks about controlled access.  In a political sense we know the real walls out there that divide people and states symbolizes repression, political power, and intolerance, but I don’t want to limit the power of the image with just one interpretation to just one level. It’s more interesting if we leave it undefined and let the viewer reclaim the image to one or to all possible meanings.
