MELINA BERKENWALD
Artist Statement
Melina Berkenwald works with multiple media. Drawing, photography, video, texts, and others are employed isolated or combined according to each project. She is interested in notions that relate to the gaze and the observation, time and writing, obsessions, inner (mental) and outer (real) landscapes.
She conceives each work as a project that may become a finished piece or an ongoing series to be continued throughout the years. A connection to drawing and writing can be found throughout her practice linking many of her works, whish are mostly triggered on the move and during her encounter with site/temporal-specific situations.
She has a conceptual approach that allows for a slow process-based methodology that privileges a subtle and discrete quality of refined transparencies and non-evident details achieved via strong methodologies such as cut-outs, incisions or stitches on a surface.
